UKBET centre opens the door for working children 

UKBET observes the “Universal Children Day-2013” by opening a “Center for working children” at Gazi Burhan Uddin Road ,Noyagaon ,Sylhet .The honorable Mayor of Sylhet City Corporation Mr Ariful Hoque Chowdhury formally opened the centre.

The children engaged in hazardous work in steel factories and workshops in this area will be able get formal and non-formal education, basic health services, safety equipment, entertainment and many other services from this centre. UKBET will also continue advocacy with the employer to ensure conducive work environment .The related support and training will be provided to the employer . The advocacy will be done with the parents for not sending their children to work .The necessary support will be provided to the children for their going back to school or vocational training.

UKBET will open and run many other centers like this in the areas where children are engaged in hazardous work.

The British Council's Director's visit to UKBET's Book Reading Competition project

Mr Stefan Roman (Regional Director, South Asia, British Council), Ms Rosemary Arnott, (Country Director of British Council, Bangladesh) and Ms Sarwat Masuda Reza (Manager of British Council, Dhaka) all visited our  "Book Reading Competition" project at Cambridge Grammar School on Thursday 20th September 2012.  They were delighted to see the students' keen interest and participation in this project and spent some time having a very lively discussion with them.

 At present the following schools are participating in this project:

  1. BIAM English Medium School, Bishwanath.
  2. Sunny Hill International School & College, Uposhahar, Sylhet.
  3. Cambridge Grammar School, Pir Mohollah, Sylhet.
  4. Shining Jewels School & College, Uposhahar, Sylhet.
  5. Gobindagonj ML High School, Gobindagonj, Chhatak. 
  6. Lalabazar ML High School, Lalabazar, Sylhet.
  7. Charkhai High School, Charkhai Bazar, Beanibazar, Sylhet

We are delighted to announce that UKBET, having been involved in this project partnership with the British Council since March 2012, will be extending the project to a total of 20 school in Sylhet next year. If you would like to find out more, please get in touch.
