UKBET's workshop on First Aid for the employers of automobile workshops and steel safe manufacturing factories

UKBET has arranged a training on First Aid for the employers of automobile workshops and steel safe manufacturing factories which are located at Ward-22 of Sylhet City Corporation. 25 employers were trained on -how to provide the First Aid in the incidents/accidents which take place in those workplaces in particular. The training was facilitated by Dr Saber Ahmed, Medical Officer-Medicine Department and Dr Adnan Chowdhury –Medical Officer, Surgery Department of M A G Osmani Medical College Hospital, Sylhet. Annette Zera-the Chair-UKBET’s Board of Trustees , UK and Mr Khondokar Monwar Mursed, UNO, Sylhet Sadar were also present at the programme. First Aid Boxes were provided to the employers after the training.


This is to mention that Bangladesh Government has declared 38 types of work as hazardous for any person under 18. Automobile workshop and steel factories are included in this list. 


UKBET’s Working Children’s Project aims to engage and rehabilitate children working in hazardous conditions. We want these children to have the opportunity to learn, develop new skills and enjoy their childhoods. And we are not just working with the children - we are also helping their employers make their workplaces safer and talking to the parents and siblings about their conditions and needs.

UKBET organised a World Day Against Child Labour(12 June) seminar as a part of its campaign to end child labour and exploitation. 

The lunchtime staff seminar for London Borough of Tower Hamlets staff was organised to raise awareness of child labour and the work UKBET does with some of the most impoverished children on the planet.


The dissemination event of Teaching and Learning English (TaLE) project 


The dissemination event of Teaching and Learning English (TaLE) project took place at the conference room of UKBET on 20 April,2014.


 TaLE is a innovative project funded through the European Integration Fund and  led by Learning Unlimited working in partnership with UKBET, St Giles Educational Trust and Greenwich Community College. The project is supporting  Bangladeshi women who are planning to settle in the UK to settle with their husbands/families by offering free ESOL classes. These classes help women learn the language they need to help them feel part of life in the UK. They cover important topics such as health, housing, education, transport, safety and work in the UK. The ESOL courses are run by local teachers who are receiving Cambridge-accredited training with trainers from St Giles  International.


  • 134 women got free ESOL preparation support course .
  • 29 Teacher of English have completed Cambridge’s Teaching Knowledge Test –TKT
  • 09 Teacher of English have completed Cambridge’s In-service Certificate of English Language Teachig –ICELT 
  • Around 5000 English Language learners are getting the benefit of the teacher training courses arranged under the project.



The chief guest of the programme Mr. Khondoker Monwar Murshed –UNO, Sylhet Sadar thanked UKBET for taking such a innovative and effective project for the development of Teaching and Learning English. Julia McGerty  from Learning Unlimited, Frances Perry,Vivienne Emery from St. Giles Educational Trust were also present with many others.


UKBET open its second Centre for working Children in Sylhet

UKBET celebrates the New year 2014 by opening it’s 2nd “Centre for working children” at Uposhohor Point, Sylhet.The employers have opened the centre by handing over Education Materials to the children who work in their workshops.

Mr Ajit Roy Vojon, General Secretary of Automobile workshop owners’ association, Mr. Kamal the owner of Mohammodia Automobile, Roton Shinha –the owner of Roton Automobile were present at the program with many others.

The children engaged in hazardous work at automobile workshops in this area will be able get formal and non-formal education, basic health services, safety equipment, entertainment and many other services from this centre. UKBET will also continue advocacy with the employer to ensure conducive work environment .The related support and training will be provided to the employer. The advocacy will be done with the parents for not sending their children to work .The necessary support will be provided to the children for their going back to school or vocational training.

This is the 2nd centre of this type under the child labour project of UKBET. Many other centers like these two will be opened in the areas where children are engaged in hazardous work.


Muktijuddhar Kache Muktijuddher Golpo

Bedananda Bhatcharjee & Rana Barman- two prominent freedom fighters from Sylhet shared their practical experiences of battles during Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 with the members of “UKBET Centre” for working children at a program titled “Muktijudhhar Kache Muktijuddher Golpo Shunar Ashor”.
